This person is the first known plantswoman to collect and send naturalia across the Atlantic from the American Colonies for studying and naming in Europe. Several butterflies were named after her, including the Viceroy seen here--so called as it imitates the mighty Monarch. I have added her to the Stories section on the website.   READ MORE

REBECCA AUSTIN

This woman would become the foremost expert on Darlingtonia,our west coast carnivorous plant. A schoolteacher in the Midwest, her life was threatened for being an Abolitionist. She moved to California where she would take her sewing to the field for days on end, to observe the ways of this amazing plant. I've just added a photo gallery of carnivorous plants to the Plants page of the website.

INDIAN PAINTBRUSH

A client recently asked me about this pretty plant. Initially I thought it must be a type of Indian Paintbrush, Castilleja. Well, it is in a way. Though from different plant families, both are hemiparasitic and I'm told one can naturalize either one from seed if planted with an agreeable host like Roemer's fescue. If like me you've failed at naturalizing Indian Paintbrush,give it a try with one or both! Seed is often available at Klamath Siskiyou Native Seeds.
